What income boingboing.net generates?
Another successful blog I wish to mention here is boingboing.net. Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair, the owners of the blog, started it back in January 2000 – they have got quite an experience, especially compared to the blogs occupying the first 3 places in my ranking (they are almost twice as old)! How much money do they make and how much of the traffic on their site is there?
Let me give you a quick answer: the revenue of boingboing.net is estimated at over 1 million a year… Here you go, pretty nice, isn’t it? If you wonder what kind of traffic generates huge money like that I will tell you: it is 22 million page views coming from 2.6 million visitors (of course unique). So do the math: how many visitors do you want to attract? How much money will you make?
If you reached the level of boingboing.net you could charge $350 for a weekly ad in a form of a small button. If you are talking banners, then it would be in $2000-$3000 range (calculated at 170,000 impressions). Like in previous examples, if you want to advertise you need to talk to Federated Media on that.
One of the big advantages of the blog is frequent posting, which averages 20-40 posts a day! Obviously this kind of frequency results from 4 authors working full time on content for the site. You can read about comics, computer, technology or even science fiction.
I think that blog owners are really modest people – also in this case Mark and Carla say that viewers and readers just kept on visiting the blog and their number just grew, and grew and grew for reasons they still do not fully understand… They admit however, that at this point it actually became a business. Not a bad one…
And in school they told me you cannot achieve anything without a plan… Do you really think that they were not expecting the blog to grow like that and not working on that in any way, shape or form?
