Gothamist well below hundreds thousand USD per month

This item was filed under [ Profitable blogs ]

In the ranking of incredibly successful and lucrative blogs a guy on 5th place makes “only” $55.000 per month. Is this bad? Not at all! Oh my, I bet everyone would love this kind of money, on a monthly basis, coming to the pocket . However, if you compare it to the 1st - 4th place (200k, 166k, 111k and 100k respectively), Gothamist has got plenty of catching up to do ;-)

What is worth mentioning is that the $50k per month is not estimate: it is a monthly average based on past 12 months. Publisher and co-founder of the blog, Jake Dobkin is taking writing the blog seriously and going to the next level by selling the ads himself. Why? The answer is simple: to maximize revenue. As a matter of fact he is becoming so busy, that is thinking of hiring a sales director responsible for ads sales, who would work full-time. Jake, together with Jen Chung (second co-founder), employ total of five editors, located in 5 different locations. These are full-time positions. Apart from that they also hire part-time associate editors and paid contributors when needs arise.

Yes, this is serious approach to blogging. It is more than just a hobby, you can call it a small-business. And the outcome is really impressive, because the team generates around 20-25 posts daily! This translates to 7 million page views a month. And advertisers are attracted by the audience: educated, young and wealthy. What a great demographics of blog readers! Because they live in big cities the ads can be further targeted geographically. And the owners obviously know that, saying that this kind of benefit (for advertisers) is hardly found on other independent publishers sites or blogs.

I never thought of that when starting this blog: I did not realize that potential of money making by blogging is that huge and also that it would be beneficial to have geographically targeted audience. Well, I guess one learns something every day, right? The important thing is to put it into practice!
